A wonderful novel that explores the lives of Jewish refugees in
Shanghai during WWII. As many as 30,3000 visas were issued to
Austrian Jews by Dr. Ho Feng Shen, the Chinese Ambassador to
Austria during the years 1937-1938. The friendship that developed
between LiHo, a beautiful and talented singer and a Jewish girl,
Romy, who suVers from survivor’s guilt, is a compelling story of
friendship lived within the backdrop of wartime existence.
The novel moves back and forth to 2016 when Alexandra, a
granddaughter of Romy, learns family history and secrets that have
been hidden for more than 50 years. A well written book that helps
us understand just how much the past is always with us
