With musical accompaniment as illustrations, this lecture will show how central the Broadway musical has been to expressing Jewish ambitions and values, and to making America itself into a more coherent and united nation. This lecture will provide the historical context for how Jews came to dominate so much of American popular music over half a century.
Professor Stephen J. Whitfield holds the Max Richter Chair in American Civilization at Brandeis University, where he has taught since receiving his doctorate there in 1972. His B.A. is from Tulane University and his M.A. from Yale University. Trained as a historian, his curricular and research interests are primarily in the intersection of politics and ideas in the 20th century.
