|Are you the firstborn son in your family?|
The firstborn of Egypt died at Passover when the Israelites went free, we firstborn Jewish males commemorate the loss of the Egyptian firstborn by not eating or drinking the day before Pesach. (It’s a beautiful notion, actually, showing compassion and empathy even for people we don’t like.)
There is one way, however, NOT to Fast. Come to Morning Minyan Friday, April 19 at 8:15am.
(It’s a quick service. Join us!)
As part of the Service, we conduct a Siyum – the completion of one of the books of the Torah or Mishnah. In celebration, it is traditional to have a festive meal. (The commandment to have a festive meal outweighs the injunction to Fast on this day. So we eat! It also happens to be the last time before Passover when you can eat bread.)
We will also be burning our remaining Chametz at our Biur Chametz ritual following breakfast.
