Service & Scholar: Stephen Whitfield on Jewish Comedy

Saturday, March 10, 2018, 9:15 am - 12:00 pm
Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach
190 N. County Rd.
Palm Beach, FL 33480

Scholar-in-Residence: Professor Stephen J. Whitfield
“The Case for Jewish Comedy”

This presentation will show how humor is a crucial entree into Jewish communal life–its ideals and impulses and aspirations. It can be a form of satirizing the larger society, as well as the limitations of Jewish life itself.

Professor Stephen J. Whitfield holds the Max Richter Chair in American Civilization at Brandeis University, where he has taught since receiving his doctorate there in 1972. His B.A. is from Tulane University and his M.A. from Yale University. Trained as a historian, his curricular and research interests are primarily in the intersection of politics and ideas in the 20th century.
