SUMMARY:Adult Education w/ Janyce Katz
DESCRIPTION:The Menorah Journal was the leading Jewish intellectual and lit
erary magazine published in English from 1915 to 1930. Its long run ended
when Henry Hurwitz\, its founder and editor died\, in 1961.  The magazine
published the thoughts of Jewish intellectuals (and often non-Jews) about
Judaism\, the current world and ideas pertinent to the times. It became a
n integral part of the intellectual life of the educated elite in the Unit
ed States.  Its goal was to explore humanistic values within Judaism and
promote the growth of a secular Jewish culture\, “Hebraism”\, that wou
ld be both American and Jewish. It also subtly fought anti-Semitism and pr
omoted cultural pluralism over the melt into a Protestant all the same cul
ture as was then expected of immigrants. The Journal seemed to lose its si
gnificance after 1930.  Its philosophy changed several times before it en
ded. That it was forgotten is our loss.\n\nBiography of Janyce C. Katz\, E
